COUNCIL PASSES GRAHAM DOG PARK LEGISLATION - Washington, DC

The DC Council has passed a bill allowing off-leash dog parks in the District of Columbia. The bill, introduced by Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One), authorizes the Mayor to create new dog parks or add off-leash play areas for dogs in existing District - or federally-owned parks. However, the legislation does not actually establish any dog parks - it only allows for them to be established. Any additional parks or changes to existing parks would include notice to the public and a public comment period.

"This is a great day for people and dogs in the District of Columbia," said Councilmember Graham. "I live with three dogs myself, and I can tell you they're so much happier and better-behaved when they've had a chance to run around and do what dogs do. I really appreciate all the work the community - including AMDOGS and DCDOGS - has contributed to this effort." The Humane Society of the United States hailed the passage of the Graham dog park bill. "Dog parks are wonderful places for dogs to safely engage in socialization and exercise, both of which are essential for their wellbeing," said Stephanie Shain, Director of Outreach, Companion Animals for HSUS.
